William Webb Ellis (1806 – 1872) was a English Anglican clergyman who is often credited with the invention of rugby football while he was a pupil at Rugby School, Warwickshire. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Webb_Ellis The game of rugby football was well established at the Abbey School in Tipperary Town by the 1870’s and in 1879 the Clanwilliam Football Club was founded  www.munsterrugby.ie/131_508.php
