Thanks so much, Im thinking maybe she was divorced??? She came out to New Zealand with her daughters Amelia and Harriet (Stephen Lawrences wife) maybe the other daughter had died before 1861?
Appreciate your help.

Hi Choc -

A quick search for the surname Joyce on the Channel Islands 1841 census finds only one other person (other than your family in St Ouen):

St Helier Harbour
Folio 41
on board vessel "Camilla"
Jas. Joyce  45   Mariner   E   [born in England]

This would seem the only likely match - and would explain why Elizabeth was at home while her husband was working on the boat.  The Jersey Archives have a lot of information on the ships built or registered in Jersey, so I can try to find out more about "Camilla".
