The top photo badge is a good resemblance to the Grenadier Guards Musicians/Sergeants cap badge.

Did Joe survive the war? Do you know where he was from?  :-\

Hi  Jebber , old rowley & Salty thank you for your reply .
My brother has the original photo, I have E mailed him & asked to rescan at much higher resolution, so I can crop the head ,to get a better look at his cap badge to send onto you,
Joseph wasn’t at home with the family in Banbury on 1901census, he was with the family in1891 age 12,
He married by licence on the 21.2.1915 at St Clements the cert states that he was in the army at Aldershot.
Joe did survive the war, he died about 1955 in Oxford
I spotted the hat & asked an elderly neighbour, he couldn’t tell me anything .
Thanks for all the info, you have given me some home work.  :-*
Thanks again AnnE

I think it is the badge of the Army Cycle Corps, I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Jebber

The Cycle Corps was my first reaction to photo  one simply because photos of the era reflected the "Condition" of the subject, however there are no MICs that match.

So, could he have been moved prior to going to the field?

I would have thought it was quite likely, there was a lot of movment between units at that time.
