« on: Thursday 08 February 07 15:02 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find some information on a Richard Roney, born Ireland about 1822 who in 1861 was a inspector of volunteers living in Swansea, from the dob of his children up until 1855 he was serving in the East Indies and his wife was born in Calcutta, any advice on where to look for extra information would be much appreciated.

Hi,

There is a Captain Richard Roney mentioned in the 1855 Army list serving with the 96th Regiment of Foot.He had been 17 years on full pay and his promotions were;

Ensign (By Purchase) - 14th September 1838

Lieutenant - 30th April 1841

Captain - 16th July 1850

The 96th Foot deployment;

From http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/096-824.htm

  1836 Ireland
  1839 England
  1839 New South Wales
  1844 New Zealand
  1847 New Zealand
  1849 India
  1854 Ireland
  1856 Gibraltar
  1857 England
  1860 Ireland
  1862 England -detachment to New Brunswick: St. John, Fredericton (Trent affair)
  1863 Cape of Good Hope
  1865 India
  1875 England

So this would tie-in with the children being born in India prior to 1854.

No problem.

I'm not sure of the regulations regarding returning home to get married. He might have been home on furlough at the time.

Hopefully, one of the experts here will have the answer.

Hello again,

I've just found some interesting info regarding Major Roney and his 'extra' surname.

Click the following link to Google Books and in the search box enter Roney Dougal and search 'Full view books' then click on the top link..
