Scotlands Counties
« on: Friday 09 February 07 12:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I wonder if anybody can help me.
On th e h1861 census I have people born supposedly in Scotland
their place of birth looks a bit iffy ...
A bit blotty and looks like Scotland and Ireland over the top of that

but anyway it says
Galwayshire. Does anyone know where exactly Galwayshire
is in Scotland I cannot find it on any map   :-\
I know Galway is in Ireland as I have ancestors there too

Any advice gratefully appreciated

As far as I know, there is no shire by the name of Galway in Scotland.  But there is an area known as Galloway and it now forms part of the name of a region: Dumfries and Galloway.  It is in south-west Scotland sort of between Stranraer and Dumfries.

Does that help?

Hi As Nell says, it is the counties of Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. Here is a parish map of both:

Hi Little Nell.
Yes I thought of that too.
We know that Robert READ was  born in Scotland and not Ireland and all the later census have his place of birth as Scotland
He is with his parents in 1861 at Hulme Lancashire
They moved to England Lancashire Hulme before 1861
If you can view the page at all it is -
RG9 2896/96/15
This is the only census that they actually gave a County of birth as well as Country :(
and would have been helpful to be able to get our search back to Scotland

I will check Galloway though just in case

thanks

Don't you worry Anonymouse  :D

If you have relatives from that part of the world, I have lots of reference books, etc. Mine moved from Kirkcudbrightshire to North Wales via Liverpool.

PS - Is the ref you've given for the 1861 correct. I can just find a Samuel and Isabella.

Hi Gadget

Yes the reference is correct but where did Samuel and Isobella come from ?

My family are half way down the page at
52 Wood Street
William and Agnes REID
their son was my great grandfather
The offere of book reference would be greatly appreciated if I can once find where they came from

Thanks
