Census look up 1881
« on: Saturday 10 February 07 15:09 GMT (UK) »
Could someone look up the 1881 and 1891 census please.

I am trying to find John Morren born 1842 who married Charlotte Pittendreigh.  They had four children, John, James, George and Hugh Mitchell.   I found George in my local library on fiche and the other three on IGI, LDS.  Hugh, the youngest was born in Auchendoir.  John the father  may have died in Clatt.

I tried looking this up on the LDS disc in the library but failed.  Any help with this would be great.

Thanks
Betty

Hi Betty

The name is tricky on the 1881....here's the family:

12 South College St.
Aberdeen Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland
Source:FHL Film 0203450,  GROS Ref :   Volume 168-2, ED 37, Pg 10

John MOIREN, age 38  b. Auchindoir, Aberdeen, Scotland, occ: Railway Porter
Charlotte MOIREN, age 42, b, Methlic, Aberdeen, Scotland
James MOIREN, age 8, b. Auchindoir, Aberdeen, Scotland, scholar
Alexr.L. MOIREN, age 5, b. Auchindoir, Aberdeen, Scotland, scholar
Jane MOIREN, unmarried, age   26,  b. Auchindoir, Aberdeen, Scotland, Sister, occ:Serv Dom

I didn't search for them in 1891 but you can access this census through www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk .  I'll give you a hint though that Charlotte died before then.  Her DC is easily found by a mn and married name search on scotlandspeople.

Best wishes
Jean

Brilliant, thanks for that information.

I tried various spellings but did not try Moiren.

You have also found John's sister Jane which has answered another one of my queries.

I know Hugh, their son, had died by 1881 but I will check on Scotland's People the next time I am on to see what happened to John and George.  I have not picked up on Alexander so I will also have to look for him.

John's brother was also a Railway Clerk.

Thanks again

All the best
Betty

Hi again

Did you find the entry in Clatt for a 9 year old John as nephew.  No way of knowing if he is the son of  Charlotte and John but he might be.  Looks like maybe Sarah was a Morren and her aunt and sister are also in the household.  You mentioned Clatt in your post so perhaps you already have these.

Best wishes
Jean

Again brilliant.  I had found this family yesterday but I was annoyed with myself for not writing down all the information which meant another trip to the library.  I had just finished writing it up when I saw your email.  Could not have been better timed.

Sarah was a Morren, sister to Hugh who is the direct line in my research.  It had not dawned on me until now that the nephew John is the son of John who was missing from John's family in the 1881 census.  Why could they not have stayed at home on the day of  the census!!!
Helen is another sister of Hughs.

I see that Helen is unmarried in the census.  I picked her up from the IGI having been born 1847 and married John Dunstan in 1869.  Something else to check out with Scotland's People.

I am maybe making more questions but I am also answering a few.

Thanks again
Betty
