Queens South Africa Medal
« on: Monday 22 November 04 18:33 GMT (UK) »
I'm not sure if this is the proper forum to place this request so please bear with me.

An in-law member of my family has a Queens South Africa Medal, three bars, SA 1902. SA 1901. and Orange Free State. The writing on the edge of the medal reads Lieut W B Gray  Scottish C C.

I have not been able to trace any members of this in-laws family to the medal.

Would anyone have any suggestions how I might be able to clear this mystery and tie a individual to this medal?

You could try a post on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/medalcollector/

Mention it is family rather than  Medal Collecting.

yosser,

Have a look at these sites:

http://www.pinetreeweb.com/bp-qsam.htm

http://www.britishmilitarymedals.co.uk/queenssouthafricamedal.htm

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/9402/queenssouthafricamedalinfo.html

They all describe the medal and give details of what actions the bars/clasps might have been awarded for.  It may be possible to find a list of those who were awarded it.

Just a thought - are you sure about the lettering "Scottish C C." ?

MrB,

Yes, the lettering is very clear, I was wondering if one of the
C C's stood for Canada or Canadian.

I have checked the Canadian web site for South African Veterans with no luck.

Hello.
I don't know whether you got an answer to this one but here is what I know. Lieutenant William B.Gray served in South Africa 1901-1902 with the Scottish Volunteer Cycle Corps. He was an officer in the 4th Volunteer Battalion, The Royal Scots with headquarters in Edinburgh.

Hope that is of help.
