I have no idea where they got "Landed Proprietor" from!   Someone must have a good imagination  ;D

I looked all over for him in 1881 but no sign.  I suspect his name has been incorrectly written by either the enumerator or the transcriber  :-\  Either that or he was missed off completely.

regarding the possibility of misspelling...I had a look on FreeBMD and came across this birth entry:

Joseph Thomas METCALFE
December qtr, 1844 
District: Pancras
County: London, Middlesex 
Vol 1  p 346

There are a couple of other Joseph METCALFEs, born about the same time but in different areas of London (one Clerkenwell, one Strand).  Most MEDCALFs appear to be from Yorkshire at that time.
