Help Needed Please Naming Regiment
« on: Saturday 10 February 07 21:12 GMT (UK) »
Can any one please help in telling me what the following initials stand for?
RFA (Pontyclun) I found this next to the name of a great uncle who received the DCM in WW2. He was I think a signaller or at least laid lines for communications.
Any help and suggestions appreciated.

Thank you.

RFA is usually Royal Field Artillery.

I would go for Royal Field Artillery.

Have you found the information relating to your Great Uncle's DCM in the London Gazette?

If not, check here: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSearch.asp?WebType=0&Referer=WW2

Good luck.

Thanks everybody.

Yes I did find him in the London Gazette, thanks Thudders.

He was commended for laying lines under heavy fire,  this is why I thought he would be a signaller. Were they part of the Royal Field Artillery then, please?

Thanks

Yes, the RFA would have had signallers within their ranks.

Spike Milligan was a signaller with the 56th Heavy Regiment, D Battery, but was still ranked as 'Gunner' Milligan.  Hopefully your Great Uncle wasn't as wacky!
