Yep, agree with Karen.

Matilda Morris
Died February ??
Aged [75 years?]

Pretty sure now about the word Aged in the third line. Not absolutely sure about 75, but that's my hunch.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

The symbol on the upright looks like a medical caduceus - maybe she was a nurse.

Can I see "Also of " in the top line? That would mean the original grave was not erected for Matilda and might explain the military look.

That's just the "IHS" monogram, common on gravestones.
I think it says "ALSO OF" above the name, too - where was the name in relation to the top photo you've posted?

Hi All,

Been looking on Ancestry for a Matilda Morris and came across this image from 1881 census living in Southampton. I can't read the occupation but the word 'soldier' is in there. Just hoping this might be the one.

He was a Sergeant Instructor in the 1st Hants GT (may not be GT, but even if it is I've no idea what it stands for :) )

I wondered if it said "1st Hants GV" (With a rather upright "V".) There was a "1st Hants Volunteers, Royal Garrison Artillery" so could it stand for "Garrison Volunteers?" ???

Hi All,

update on that unsual grave. Well you were all nearly right but its, Matilda Norris, not Morris. The soldier in the grave is her husband, Major Henry Norris. If any one manages to visit Southampton go and look around the Old Cemetery on the Common its has victims of the Titanic and much more. Worth a visit.
