Scottish research
« on: Monday 12 February 07 04:12 GMT (UK) »
Would you please advise me which way to go with my Scottish ancestors research.
I have progressed well with the UK folk and wonder where to start on the Scotland Road.
Free BMD made it so easy for UK  but is Scotlands People the best  way to go now?
Besides Dumphries Census is there anyone else?
Would appreciate some advice please.

Hi Annette
Yes the main source is probably Scotlandspeople.  It provides census information for all thru' from 1841; it provides statutory births, marriages and deaths but also the parish record data for prior to 1855.  Statutory registration started in Scotland in 1855 unlike  England and Wales which began in 1837.  So not only the Dumfries(shire)  censuses but also the Kircudbrightshire censuses and all the other counties. :)

But that is generalising.  I see that one  of your interest is Beattie - which is one of mine.  Do your Beatties come from this county rather than Dumfries?

Are there any particular things that we can help with?

Regards
Reiver

Hi Reiver,

Thankyou for your help.   Yes I think I will have to tackle Scotlandspeople.  We are so spoilt with the FreeBMD.
Your kind offer of help tempts me to lmention my Beatties to you.

It is James BEATTIE, b Kirkgunzeon, a shoemaker who married Mary WELSH in 1838.
Mary was ch. 15.6.1817 in URR and last appeared  in the 1871 Census. She had deceased by 1880.
James appeared on the 1861 Census and had died by 1871.

I would love to obtain death certs for them if possible.

If you can offer any assistance I would appreciate it.

Regards from Aust.    Annette

Hi Annette

As they both died after 1854 in Scotland, you will be able to get their death certificates from the Scotlands People website that Reiver has mentioned. To search the index and then view and download the image will cost 6 units or £1.20 - far cheaper than an Eng & Wales one  :)

Also, Scottish certificates are much more detailed. On these you should expect to see the name and occupation of their father and the maiden surname of their mother.

Good luck  and welcome to the Dumfries and Galloway boards  :)

Hi Annette

This looks a likely entry for Mary's death on Scotlands People:

1875   BEATTIE   MARY/WELSH age 56 @ GIRTHON/KIRKCUDBRIGHT REf: 866/00 0021

There are 3 possible deaths for James in Kirkcudbright. The ages for all 3 show as 'U', unrecorded, on the index. Their ages should show on the actual image.

1. 1862   BEATTIE   JAMES U @ KIRKCUDBRIGHT   /KIRKCUDBRIGHT   871/00 0065
2. 1862   BEATTIE   JAMES U   @ KIRKPATRICK DURHAM/KIRKCUDBRIGHT 874/00 0006
3. 1864  BEATTIE JAMES U @ GIRTHON/KIRKCUDBRIGHT   866/00 0023

Regards.

Hello Gadget and Monica,

Thankyou so much for your time and help.

Yes Monica,  those death dates look good and tomorrow I will be doing some ordering.

You are all making it too easy.

Thanks again,  Annette

Annette

You don't have to order Scottish BMDs for this period. Simply register on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Once you have registered, it is free to search records. You then have to buy units to view search results/individual records (images of BMD/Census page). They are sold in blocks of 30 units for £6GB. Have a look at this link for tips on how to get the most out of SP http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,43916.0.html

As Gadget said earlier, it will cost £0.20GB to view search results and then £1GB to . on line...very good value and instant access  :) You can then save image on your computer and print off.

Regards.
