birth listed as Ireland? what now?
« on: Monday 12 February 07 10:01 GMT (UK) »
I have family with 3 children born Liverpool and then 4th child
Donald Kenneth Mathieson born c 1844 Ireland.
I have no idea why he was born in Ireland and as father does not appear to be on 1841 census I don't know if he was Irish by birth and he died before 1851!
Any clues, hints or tips please?

sorry i went offline for a while.
As far as I know mother Margaret (Nee Brownbill) was english but father Kenneth Mathieson could have been Irish as I have only found him when they married in 1831 in Liverpool. He was a hairdresser. The only Irish link i have is that their son is listed as being born in ireland on 1851 census. Having said that he is also listed as being born Scotland on a later one but it was suggested that i listen to earlier census that his mother would have given info on.
I just dont know of any reason why they would have gone to Ireland unless they had family there as they were not wealthy and can't see that they would have been going on holiday?!?

Andrea

Mathieson sounds far more Scottish than Irish to me.

But that could just be from much farther back.

Just an opinion- and not much help I'm afraid  ;)

Regards

Carol

EDIT also just realised his name is Donald...........VERY Scottish.

My Irish grandfather's name was Donald and he was named after his aunt's stepson (also Irish). I agree that the names do sound more Scottish, especially Kenneth, but Ulster was full of 'Scottish' names.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Prue and Carol

I agree with both of you that it sounds more Scottish and I have had a 'wee' look down that road but not found anything.
Just wish I could go back for a few minutes to ask them! One day I'm sure I will find out. One of Donald's older sisters was called Mary Pollock Mathieson which also sounds very scottish but I can't seem to find any connection there either.
Thanks for replies

Hi Andrea

I am having a Scots/Irish dilemma too.

There are quite a few sites with background info, eg.
http://www.ulsterancestry.com/ulster-scots.html

Hope this helps.

In Scottish naming rules, hasn't the oldest daughter got to have the middle name of maternal grandma?

Boongie Pam where are you, to put me right.

Hi Carol,
Yes I know there was some kind of naming protocol to follow but the eldest girl was just Jane, then follows Mary Pollock, next comes Kenneth who died at 2 then Donald Kenneth.
Maternal Grandmother was Mary LLoyd so maybe his mother was Jane?
Thanks Bren for that address I will look at that now
