You can access the 1871 census on scotlandspeople. It is a pay per view site - it covers the other census years as well.

I have the 1881 census on cd-rom and the only likely candidate that I could find was:-
Dwelling:   114 Benquhat
Census Place:   Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland

William JOHNSTON   M   41    M   N Stewart, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Rel:   Head
Occ:   Iron Stone Miner
Mary JOHNSTON   M   36    F   Carsphairn, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Rel:   Wife
Annie JOHNSTON       11    F   Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland
Rel:   Daur
Occ:   Scholar
William JOHNSTON       9    M   Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland
Rel:   Son
Occ:   Scholar
Jeanie JOHNSTON       5    F   Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland
Rel:   Daur
Occ:   Scholar
Thomas JOHNSTON       3    M   Haywood, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:   Son
Francis JOHNSTON       1    M   Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland
Rel:   Son

Don't know if he is yours or not. Minnigaff is quite close to Newton Stewart.
