Hi,  My Dad came across this post and sent it to me as I am researching our family tree.  James Smallman features in my tree as he was the father of Ada Emily Smallman who was married to Trevor Lawley who was my great great uncle.  Anyway, back to James Smallman.  I have him being born on 22nd November 1845 to William and Elizabeth Charlotte Smallman (nee Manning).  Both William and Elizabeth were born around 1811-14 (dates vary).  William and Elizabeth were married on 19th October 1833 at St Mary de Lode, Gloucester.  William's parents were John and Mary, whilst Elizabeth's parents were Thomas and Charlotte Manning. I think that Elizabeth was originally named Charlotte after her mother, and seems to have records in both names.
William was a shoemaker and cordwainer living in Crow Hill near Phocle Green near Upton Bishop.
William had a number of sisters and brothers - John was a boot & shoe maker) married to Elizabeth Price who died in 1876 and he remarried to an Ann Collins.  That is as far as I have got so far, but feel free to message me as I might have unearthed more by then.

James Smallman was the blacksmith in Crow Hill, living in Forge House.  Crow Hill is up a dirt track so I can't get a Google Street view picture of the house.  He later lived in Holly Cottage nearer the centre of Phocle Green, again only accessible by a dirt track.

According to a property-for-sale site this is Forge House, Crow Hill:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/UEhQxKBpgZsHEbyr9?g_st=ic

In the 1840 tithe apportionment this site is recorded as "House, Smith's Shop & Garden" – owner Theophilus Turner, occupier Jonathan Kayse.

A John Smallman is associated with four sites on the apportionment: two as owner-occupier (these are both recorded as "garden") and two as occupier (another garden, and a site referred to as "Two Houses and Gardens" occupied by John Smallman and William Evans. This latter site corresponds to the cream painted building immediately behind the three storey building shown here (seems to be Damson Cottage)

https://maps.app.goo.gl/z8bjK1S3bPxLc48E8?g_st=ic

which is very close to Forge House (just off to the left in this view).  If you follow the road to the right you can get a closer view of the cream house and its neighbour (numbers 1 and 2) one of which is where I believe John Smallman lived. On the tithe map this pair of cottages is shown as separate from Damson Cottage, but it looks to me as if the part of Damson Cottage that attaches to the cream-painted cottage is a later extension.

I’ve also found an interesting newspaper advert from 1845 that adds to this but I can’t post it here because this is a Lookup thread.
