Typescript versus manuscript
« on: Tuesday 13 February 07 11:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

I am contemplating purchasing a set of pr's for Rusper on microfiche but I have the choice of typescript or manuscript.

I've never had a choice before, the one's I've got are all typed so...

in your opinion what should  I go for?

Is the manuscript a photocopy of the original or has someone copied it out by hand?
If it's the former then I'd opt for that. Any copy, whether typed or handwritten, is liable to misreading and the original at least lets you make your own mistakes :)

I would agree with Gareth.  Apart from the misreading of a typescript the manuscripts can be so nice to look at too.

It's a transcription not an original whatever format I chose, to have the actual pr would be a dream come true.

But I realise that to read the originals dating back to the 1500's is hard work, hand written script back then is almost illegible unless you know what you're looking at. At least someone has done the hard work.

The handwritten transcription is one generation nearer to the original, just more pages to get 'fiche-ed': more fiche, more expensive.

Oh well......

Dawn, I have the original Rusper pr's on fiche (1560 - 1812)  Like you, I've never seen a manuscript offered  ???  Where is this from ?  Normally transcripts have an index, which makes life a lot easier & if there's any doubt on an entry you can always check the original next time you're at the WSRO.  If that's not an option I can always check my copies for you, but I'm still curious as to what a manuscript consists of  ???

Dawn, I saw your other posting concerning pr's & if you're refering to the Sussex Collection site as regards Rusper pr's, I don't think you have a choice of manuscript or typescript, that only refered to other resources.  What you would get is a type-written transcription on fiche and you would have to first check for the dates they covered.

PARISH REGISTER TRANSCRIPTS

The following list details those parishes for which transcripts are available. Further details regarding the actual date coverage of the fiche for individual parishes can be provided upon request.

Hello Jane

I contacted IHGS by email about their Sussex collection (prompted by another message on this board) and they very kindly emailed me back their entire catalogue. It's far too large to post on their web-site (apparently).

Anyway, there are 2 entries for Rusper, 5 fiche typewritten or 10 fiche manuscript but both are transcriptions. And the list clarifies the date ranges which are missing from the site.

I'm going to ring them and speak to a 'real' person tomorrow, I've now given myself a big doubt again over what they are selling.

Very confusing Dawn  ???  I got my fiche direct from the West Sussex Records Office.  There are 7 fiche, 4 covering 1560 - 1725 (Par 163/1/1/1) & 3 covering 1725 -1812 (Par 163/1/1/2) both General Registers, exact copies of what you find in the Records Office.

Hello Jane

I've just been looking at the west Sussex site, even more confused than you  ??? and you have the fiche.

http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/RO/Register_fiche_list_01_03_4.pdf

Went to 'Rusper' and not only are there general registers that you mention but also more that you don't.

Look like another phone call tomorrow, along with the one to IHGS which didn't get done today.
