Death certificate for 1832?
« on: Tuesday 13 February 07 13:34 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how easy it would be to get a death certificate for someone who died in 1832? I have the exact date (I think) and I know where he died (rather sadly he killed himself with a pistol in his office), but would the normal service go back this far?

Any ideas gratefully received.

There are no death certificates prior to civil registration which began 1 July 1837.  The best you will get is a burial entry in the parish register.  But if he killed himself, was he given a decent burial by the church.  Suicide was a crime back then.   :-\

Have you looked for a report in the newspapers of the time?  Or checked to see if anything is recorded in the county archive?  Check out the archive catalogue database at

It's difficult to tell - he was wealthy and well connected so an exception might have been made. His death was reported in The Times but as a news item rather than an obit. The problem is that his name was Charles Shand, and my distant NZ cousins and I wanted to pin down which Charles this was as there are several. I think I know which one, which is on their side, but I am not sure....
There are 3 items listed on the link you gave, but they all seem to be for business transactions.
