I've just checked the 1841, Co. Durham entry that you mentioned. He is down as not born County which would fit. I then looked at Callenders in Northumberland and there seem to be quite a few in Newburn. If you can get the marriage cert, there's a good chance his parents might be still alive on the 1841.

Think i just found their marriage on familysearch.org  as Catherine Newton and Edward Emerson Callender 17th Aug 1854,and then as i had found out he was dead by the 1871 census..i then found his death

I think i have found Edwards father as John Callender b. c1792 Lanchester
his mother would be Amelia Hannah b. c1796 Clerkenwell London

found this in 1841 census, but edward is not mentioned!!??
..i only came to this conclusion as in the 1871 Ryton census there is a grand daughter Mary age 11 living with them...she is my grandmother daughter of William R Callender...who is the son of Edward Emerson Callender
