The only Arthur Cole born within 5 years of a circa birth/baptism date in Hampshire is

20th March 1829 Havant
Arthur son of Thomas & Maria

His birthplace on the 1851 census is 'Havent'.

Only 3 Maria baptisms in Kimpton within 5 years of circa 1824 - 2
(1 is an Anna) Maria Browns and 1 Maria Spinels.
In Havant - Maria's birthplace on the 1861 census there were 5 Maria baptisms - 1 Maria Lee, 2 Maria Hoar/es, 1 Ann Maria Godden and 1 Harriet Maria Carter.

Havant and Kimpton are about 36 miles apart.

However if Arthur and Maria's marriage is the 1847 one in St George Southwark then Maria was Maria Spearwood on marriage? What information about their fathers do Arthur and Maria give on their marriage?

1841 census HO107 389/8 folio 31 page 25
West Street Havant  Hampshire
Thomas Cole 40  Hampshire   Ag lab
Thomas Cole 15  Hampshire
Arthur Cole 13 Hampshire

I can't see anyone with the surname Spearwood on the 1841 or 1851 censuses.

Regards

Valda

Just came across this post by chance.

Kimpton is a small village about 5 minutes down the road from me.  If you can give me gg mothers maiden name or her parents names I'll take a trip to the churchyard and have a look round.

Hi Valda -

Many thanks for all your responses to my posts. I will take some time now to digest the information. I may have been (it appears that I was indeed) looking at all the wrong places for all the wrong reasons.

The information I provided in my posts about the Cole and Shearwood families had come from my g grandmothers records so I will need to re evaluate those now too.

Interesting to note the maiden name Spearwood, Shearwood, Sherwood.  I wonder if the name on the Cole/Spearwood marriage cert is / was wrong.

Just a thought ... If John and Sarah Sherwood were her parents then why isn't she listed in the 1841 census? More questions to ponder ...

Thanks again,
