Help with Uniform Please
« on: Wednesday 14 February 07 19:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please could anyone tell me what uniform this is.  He is a soldier in WW1 and I think his surname will be Manning but other than that I have no idea.

Thanks in anticipation.

Rachel :)

Hi Rachel,

He looks more like a solder from the mid thirties to the period of the second world war rather than the 1st ww. He is an officer from the Royal Artillery going by the collar dogs and from what I can see of the cap badge.

I'm sorry too Rachel, but I do think he's later.

What made you think he might be WW1? Did you find him in some family stuff?

Hi Wendi,

Yes, my grandma had kept it and she got it from her mother.  So I hastily presumed that it was about WW1 as she also had another photo from that time.

It maybe one of those photos that you never find out who they were.

Regards

Rachel

Hey trust me gal we don't go there that easily on Rootschat  :D

The problem the photograph you have posted is that there is not a clear view of his cap badge - which is what we need.  Hansome chap that he is !!

Perhaps you should post the other photo, if you can obtain a copy?

In the mean time it would be really good if you could tell us about why your Great Grandma might have kept it?

Hi Wendi

The other photo was of a different soldier and I posted it a few weeks ago, I found out that he was a second lieutenant in the M.G.C in WW1.  My grandma again thought that he was a Manning (that was my Gt Grandmothers maiden name) and lo and behold I found a William Thomas Manning in the M.G.C at the time of WW1 and I downloaded his medal card.  I am due to go to Kew on Saturday and am hoping to look up his army record to check for definite.

This is partly what prompted me to do the same for this unknown chap.  Unfortunately I cannot get a good picture of his cap badge as the original is not that great.

If it is more 1930's this would mean that army records will still be with the MOD I assume?

Yes it would mean his records are at the MOD but you'd have to have Full name, DofB and be next of kin  :-\

Good luck at Kew with pic no. 1 (and don't rule out what the guys said in the post)

Hi Wendi

I will have to interrogate my grandma a bit further to see if she remembers anyone in the army between the two world wars.

Thanks for your help :D

Get all you can out of your grandma before you go to Kew - so as not to waste the day, the more you quiz them the more they seem to open up ???

You'll find the most about pre 1920 at Kew so I'm told
