Marriage of William Whordley
« on: Wednesday 14 February 07 23:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Trying to find the marriage of William Whordley.  He was born 1851 in Shropshire. His eldest child was born in 1875 and his wife in the census is down as either Elizabeth or Betsy.

I would like to find out his wife's maiden name and possibly her parents.  Believe Willliam's parents to be James and Elizabeth.

Thanks
Joanna

Hi Joanna

Where was his wife, and children, born? One of the children's birth certificates would show the mother's maiden name.

Quite often couples were married in the brides's hometown.

Which census have you found the family in, and what are the references?

Hi thanks for replying - since posting back in Feb, managed to get a child's birth cert and then their wedding cert.  So managed to find out that she was Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Robert and Fanny.

Not an easy name to trace but seem to be doing ok!

regards
Joanna

That's good news Joanna, at least you can now continue working backwards.

If you need anything looking up in any of the census please let me know.

Hi Lloydy

Can I take you up on your offer of help, please?

I have gone back a couple of generations.  I have found Charles Whordley in the 1841 census with his age at 40.  I have also found a Charles in the bmd born 1798 and died 1876, but I can't find him in any of the census, wonder if you might have better success.  The 41 info is HO107/907/4.
Charles Whordley     abt 1801
Eli Whordley   abt 1837
Henry Whordley   abt 1821
James Whordley   abt 1826
John Whordley   abt 1832
Margrett Whordley   abt 1834
Mark Whordley   abt 1839
Mary Whordley   abt 1801
Thomas Whordley   abt 1826

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Joanna

 ??? ??? ???

I can't seem to find Charles, and I've also done a search on Mark, Eli, Margaret and Henry but can't find them either.

I've tried searching without a surname, just using first name, and year of birth.  They must be there somewhere...........mistranscribed >:(

 ??? ??? ???

I did find a Mary Whordley, Widow in Shropshire but the ages were wrong for the children, and there was a daughter Emma.

It's like the whole family disappeared :(

I will keep looking..............

Hi Lloydy

It is strange, had I not seen the bmd entry I would have assumed he died after 1841.

I found James in the 51 and married, he is my direct ancestor, although he was written as Walley and I only found him because he was living with his brother and mother inlaw.
