I have had a quick go , but it shows up a lot of vertical banding .

These men are trimmers at Amble Harbour

The gent on the left of the picture is my husbands grt grandfather John Gair born 1838 Amble and seated middle  row 2nd  from the left is one of  his sons and his other son is directly behind

What does a Trimmer do?

These men levelled the coal on the ships before the ships sailed
so that the ship was level and trimmed to sail 
The engines brought the coal down to the harbour from Broomhill
to load onto the ships

Can I add on a washing day and if the wind was the wrong the washing got  all sooty and had to be washed again there were no tumble dryers when my children  were little ,the worst thing were  the nappies

That was real work. Everything was real work in those days...we don't know how good we have it...

I don't know why but I didn't think they were coal miners, yet I was wondering about what is obviously to an ex miner - a coal shovel. I hadn't thought about trimmers.
