A coal shovel is easily recognised by its size, you will see that the one in the picture is quite large and turned up steeply at the sides so as to hold more material - this is because coal is relatively light compared to rock. As to the shape, a coal shovel is usually square nose wheras the smaller rock shovel was round nosed. Having said that there were some colliers who would have thier shovels modified to suit, so your husband may be correct.

Bet you didn,t know that shovels were so technical?

Okay, I must admit to a little insider knowledge - I just knew that being a coal shovel it would be turned up. But at least the fact that it is large is there for all to see.
