Dates for Easter since 1837
« on: Thursday 15 February 07 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Hiya,
Can anyone help with providing, or telling me where to obtain, the dates for Good Friday and Easter Sunday from 1837?

I've just started transcribing the baptisms and marriage from my local church and would be interested to know how many of these occured at easter.

Of course, it's easy to see those which occured over the Christmas period but although I have the dates, I've no idea when Easter occured.

For those of you interested, up to 90% of baptisms between 1837 and 1850 don't appear on the GRO records. No wonder we've all had problems finding those elusive black sheep!!

A useful site to download is Calisto
http://homepages.tesco.net/~jk.calisto/calisto/program/index.htm

The main window displays:
1 - 2999   the English calendar
326 - 2999  Easter day
1154 - 1751  illustrates 1668/9 style dates (ie old New Years Day)
1066 - 1964  shows the English regnal year - monarch's name, accession date and year number
827 - 1065  shows the English monarch's name

No. Slight misunderstanding. I'm transcribing the baptism records from our local church and then looking to see how many of them were registered (1837 - 1875). In most years at least 40% of the baptisms are not registered on the GRO. At worst it reaches 90%.
I haven't yet checked the marriages on the GRO, so can't give a figure.

Suffice to say that based on our local church, most families didn't register the births of their children according to the civil requirements between 1837 and 1875. No wonder it's difficult tracing some distant relis!

Hope that helps to clarify

That's interesting. According to 'The Oxford Companion to Local and Family History', it has been estimated that in some parts of England and Wales, particularly Surrey, Sussex, Middlesex, Essex, and Shropshire, up to 15% of births were not registered between 1837 and 1860. They give no source for this.

Under the 1836 Act the onus was on the registrar to collect births and deaths and he could be fined for failure to register them. In carrying out his duties the parents were compelled, under the Act to supply the information when asked. The registrars also had an incentive to register as they were paid for the entries viz. for the first Twenty Entries of Births and Deaths in every Year which he shall have registered, whether the same be of Births or of Deaths indiscriminately, Two Shillings and Sixpence each, and One Shilling for every subsequent entry of Births or Deaths in each Year. In fact two registrars were jailed for fraudulent entries. In one case births and the other births and deaths.
