« on: Friday 16 February 07 22:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello, Can someone do something with this image.  One of the policemen is my ancestor but not sure which one.  Any chance of dating photo and identifying Police Force.  Could be Edinburgh.  Any improvement on photo welcome

I am glad you found the site, I cannot help you with dating, Prue or OR are better at that, sorry  :-\

But I did clean it up a little.  If you find out what the uniform was and ever want a colour, just give me a hoy, okay?   ;D ;D

Cheers for now

Hi Shebe,

Welcome to Rootschat. I am afraid that I can not really help you with dating on this one. From what I know of them (and that is very little) police uniforms hardly changed from 1900 to the late forties (high stand up collar, two breast pockets, that type of thing). However the helmets look more for summer wear with the wide brim and I do not know if any force that had them as I have only seen pictures of the standard helmets. If I was to try and date this however I would go for a date line of the early 1900's to just before the 1st ww

These officers are wearing a 5 button tunic with pleated breast pockets and open collar. This uniform was introduced by the Met Police in 1934 and was used until 1949. The photo appears to record the award of the Police Medal.

Check out www.aowo42.dsl.pipex.com/Metpoliceuniform.htm

This site has the history of Met Police uniform changes

Sorry to disagree but the Met introduced a 5 button tunic in 1897 for summer wear this tunic had two breast pockets.
However the anomalies lie in the collar numbers .... in 1906 the met introduced epaulettes although they did away with them slightly later.

The first location given was possibly edinburgh .... if this is so the photograph is certainly pre 1932 as Scottish police forces adopted the soft cap at that time. The cap badge does not look like any I have seen for Edinburgh though.
