Yes the five button was introduced in 1897 to 1934 BUT it was with a closed collar and no pocket pleats

Wow!
Does no one sleep?  I cannot believe the photos and suggestions I have been given.  You are absolutely marvellous all of you.  I will follow up the suggestions and with the clarity of the photos hopefully will eventually  find which one is my ancester.  He emigrated to South Africa .......... and his name is James Brown! ....... that is all I know about him. 
Beware I am so encouraged I will be sending you more topics although its all a bit one sided I'm afraid as I have none of your talents/knowledge.
