Intriguing that other folk having this prob also use a BT router. Mine is a homehub A903.
Windows firewall etc is disabled, because the bt/yahoo comes with norton stuff.
Clearing cookies etc doesn't seem to make any difference to the prob.
Being a genuine bona fide tightwad I power down at least once a day. Must admit that I don't see the significance of that.

Has anyone tried disabling their personal firewall and then accessing rootschat?

It's worth a try.

Spent 2 fruitless hours with BT help desk and disabled firewall but still the same fault. They gave up after that.
Does any one understand these settings and know if they are right.

I've had exactly the same problem, again with BT Home Hub, except I can sometimes get on unexpectedly, this time through a link in a message. I am hastily typing this before it goes off again. My husband, who knows more about computer innards than I do, hasn't been able to help. That link somebody posted looked interesting; it looks as if the problem as we suspected, is with BT, which is a shame because goodness knows when (or if) they'll be able to sort it out.  We can but hope. I shall now read all the messages I can before I disappear into cyberspace!

Well done, Downside!

This looks very much like a recurrence of that old bt dns fault.

Spent ages trying to get into rootschat yesterday without success. My son, who is not on bt, got in straight away. And when I used a pc at our local library there was no prob at all. Then, this morning *BINGO* I'm straight in on my own pc.

The frustration is, as noted on The Register, trying to get bt to own a prob. I logged full details yesterday, referring to the piece in The Register and, guess what, some bt bloke in Chennai tells me to clear cookies and TIFs. ...Doh ...

Like all the other customer 'service' centres, these well meaning folk are targeted to clear a certain number of faults and queries during their shift. They aren't thanked for referring a complaint upwards. With bt there seems no way of getting past their fixed procedures, other than writing to the Chief Exec!

Anyway, thanks again.

Yes ..... its strange the way technical problems are managed by these enterprises.

What happened to 'taking ownership of a problem'  ...

Problem Severity, Priority, escalation to higher levels of Support, escalation to Management ?

All tried and trusted Customer Sat' processes for Mainframe Vendors ..... but I guess when you're dealing with the volumes of customers and problems involved in the PC World, plus outsourcing to save costs .... that goes out of the window.
