Royal Marines in 1860's
« on: Saturday 17 February 07 08:20 GMT (UK) »
My 2 x Great Grandfather was Daniel Hinton, born 1837.
I cannot find him on 1861 census but he was married on 25 Dec 1861 and his occupation is given as Private, Royal Marines, Woolwich.
His wife was described as a widow by the time of the 1871 census and his youngest child was born about 1868.
I cannot find a record of his death in this country, so could anyone please tell me where Royal Marines were likely to have been fighting around 1868-71.  Could it possible have been India, as I have other ancestors in the military who died around that time too?
On his marriage certificate he is named as Daniel Hinton Summers - the Summers bit being the name of his step father and he dropped this after his marriage, so military records could have him as Daniel Summers Hinton prior to Dec 1861 and Daniel Hinton after Dec 1861.
Rather confusing I know, but I hope someone can point me in the right direction.
