Hello Alastair,

It does look as though the pic has been touched up a tad....
believe hand tinting was quite popular in Victorian era.
Would suggest you PM Pru ....she is expert in preserving pics
and would be able to offer far more advice on original and help with
preservation.
In the meantime, here's a quickie 2007 touch up.

Cheers,

Skippy

Thanks EVERYONE for some wonderful contributions - I'm overwhelmed!
I wasn't really expecting such a great response as my question was really about what I can do with the ORIGINAL. It has some stains on it which I'd already touched up a little on the copy I posted.
Prue - thanks for your reply. I live in Hampshire, UK and would love to have it restored but don't know where to find a professional restorer  who would treat it with sensitivity & respect - it's been around over 100 years and I don't want to wreck it!
Thanks again everyone - great!

Hi Alistair  :)

They have done a lovely job those restorers, haven't they  :D  Goes to show how good the results can be when you start with a great picture as the starting point.

If you go to this website:
http://www.conservationregister.com/Searchworkshop2.asp?CS=choose%20service

And choose from the drop down menus, you will come up with conservators in your area.  They have a category for "photographs - paper based" which is what you should specify.

If you can't find someone on that list who is near to you, let me know and I'll think of something else!  ;)
