What did my 3 x gt grandma die of?
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 12:43 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone read this and suggest what she died of please.

I can see that it says Sciatica- but my mum has that, but I don't expect it to kill her  8)

Also why does the informant have an address under her name- it isn't the same as where the death occured. And what do you think her name is- I thought it said Hannah Dallamore- but no one of that name exists in either 1841 or 51.

Thanks

Carol

Hello

Not sure but looking at the last 3 letters working off other letters in the hannah they look to be hus

so could be SCIRRHUS  which was some form of cancerous tumour what does anyone else think?

Sciatica is very painful but almost invariably due to very ordinary things like just getting a bit old and creaky etc (yes, I'm old and creaky).

But perhaps this lady had Sciatica as well as another complaint - or, indeed, Sciatica caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve due to another problem e.g. a tumour.

As angi0 said, perhaps 'schirrpus/schirrhus' might be an error for 'schirrous' which is a cancer.

And perhaps the other word is to do with 'mammae' i.e. perhaps it's breast cancer.

I'm really sorry, Carol, to suggest such a nasty disease for your 3Ggma and hope someone else can come up with a more benign suggestion.

JAP

Scirrhous Refers to a growth, often malignant, which was hard and strong due to dense fibrous tissue. A hard tumour is likely to be a sarcoma
Scirrhus A large, hard and painless swelling, often cancer or sarcoma

Try Hannah Dallimore, there are three in 1841 census.

Thanks for the suggestions guys and gals.

Sounds a bit grewsome doesn't it.I did wonder about that third word which seems to start with an M.

I'd seen those 3 Hannah's Stan- but this was in Hammersmith so I'm not convinced.

Shame that it's mid censuses though- maybe one of them had moved there by then- or a Hannah married a Dalla(i) more?
