Hi Monica,
yes I saw that a little earlier and thought Ann  could have been a nickname for Agnes.
Also looking at their marriage record, it says that her father David was from  somewhere like Creiton, Gallaway Shire... tried to look up all 3 on a map but no luck... you have no idea where this could be?  Is it likely that Gallaway would be Ireland?
regards, Carol

I think it's more likely to be the Dumfries and Gallaway region...specially with the ...shire ending. You might want to try a post on the Dumfries/Wigtown boards with a link into this post. Try and catch the attention of the place names experts..there are more than a few here on RootsChat  :)

Regards.

Just checked this site www.old-maps.co.uk/. There is a map for Creetown in Wigtownshire. I wonder if this is it?

Just had a look at it, it's very faded even when magnified. There will be other maps sources for it I would think. It's a start!

Added: Carol, it's still alive and well - have a look at multimap, name unchanged over the years, still Creetown.

2nd Addition:  ....there is also a Creetown in Kircudbrightshire also in the same general region. Could be either  :-\.

I can see a birth entry on IGI for a David Houston in the right time frame in Kircudbright and a couple of marriages show there also. Hard to say Carol, without Agnes's mother's name.

Not sure if you have this but it might help with the family names (naming patterns). This is John and Jane's 1841 census entry in Bride IOM:

John, 40, light keeper, b. Scotland
Jane, 25, b. Scotland
Agnes, 11, b. Scotland
Isabella, 10
David, 8
Simon, 6
Samuel, 4
Jane, 1

Regards.

Monica

Hi Monica,
yes this is my family, Simon is my g-g-grandfather.  I have just been trying to find a clue on Ancestry.co.uk ( are you a member?)
I found a possible link.... found a census for 1851 ( not the best census fot info sadly) there is an Agnes Leslie born Haddington 1774, but living in the same house are a family of Houstons... not sure if that is a co-incidence or not! Could be a nephew from the age gap.

From the info on Ancestry I would guess that 160 Saltmarket Street may be a tenement with a number of families living there. Hard to say on the Houston household, specially when James shows a Dumbarton birth place. Perhaps a better route to verify whether this is your Agnes would be to research the granddaughter who is living with this Agnes: Agnes Stuart, 18, born Glasgow.

Did look promising but don't think this is your Agnes on Ancestry:

Agnes b. 1831 in Gorbals, parents William Stewart and Agnes Leslie
Agnes Leslie b. 1809 Gorbals, parents William Leslie and Agnes Steel

I think the Agnes Leslie b. 1774 may well be maiden name Steel. She showed as Annuitant on the 1851 Census. This entry on Wills & Testaments on SP could well relate to her:

Leslie   Agnes   17/11/1852   Mrs., alias Steel, widow of William Leslie   Will   Glasgow Sheriff Court Wills   SC36/51/31

Hi Monica,
Thanks for all your imput, I have been searching all the files  and all your leads, but am not getting much further, think it is time to leave well alone for a little while and look at other lines for a bit, maybe when I come Back to it, I can start afresh and find a bit more.  Thanks again for all your help, regards, Carol
