Murphys from Mayo to Manchester
« on: Tuesday 23 November 04 20:46 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help.
I am trying to find info about James Murphy who was born in Co Mayo about 1831, he married Margaret Airley (spelling not certain) and had one child John about 1850/51. The family then moved to Manchester and more children were born there, Catherine, Daniel. Mary and Margaret)
James' parents were John and Mary Murphy.
These are the only facts I know for certain apart from James occupation as a chair bottomer or maker.

I wrote to Mayo History centre who asked me for mother's maiden to enable them to look for the baptism of John. This I supplied and despite writing again have had no reply and this was over 4 months ago so I gues they are not going to reply.
I would appreciate any help as to where I go from here.

Hi Audrey

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Hi Aud

Have you thought of using the Manchester & Lancs. F.H.S. - due to the large Irish population in Manchester in the 1800-1900's, they have a whole section devoted to Irish Ancestry

BUCKLEY, Ches. & Lancs, DUNN, Ireland & Lancs. EDGSON, Rutland, Leics & Lancs. LYON, Lancs. McNULTY, Ireland & Lancs. MORRIS, Beds, Hunts & Lancs. SWARBRICK, Lancs. TURNER, Lancs. WILLIAMSON, Lancs.

Thanks for the replies.
I eventually got a reply from South Mayo who have checked all the parishes they have records for and drew a blank.
I am not a member of M/c & Lanc FHS. I am unable to visit due to having to work and their hours are impossible to work round apart from the fact that I live quite a distance away. I was given to understand they would only give help to members. is this not correct?
I think I will have to give up on this though. If there are no records available which there don' t seem to be for the year and place I need there doesn't seem to be anywhere else to go.
Thanks anyway

 :) :)

Aud, you don't have to live near, or visit the M&L.F.H.S. to get help from them.  Their membership covers the whole of the UK, Australia, USA and New Zealand etc.

All you have to do is become a member, and you'll receive their quarterly journal where you can post queries and/or ask questions.  You can even write to them and ask for help. They can also put you in touch with researchers specialising in Irish matters - so please don't dismiss it till you've tried it.

 :) :)

Thank you for your reply, will certainly consider it. The info I need is from Ireland though, is it likely that they could help.
I have traced them from their arrival in Manchester.

Tracey
I do not know if there is a link or not as I have very little info on James other than his parents names being John and Mary or Maria. If any info comes to light I will contact you.

hi there

try

http://eastmayo.org/Aghamore_1864_1883_and_Knock_1869_1905_Baptisms.htm

I found your note as I am looking for a James Murphy myself who lived in Manchester, or irish origin, in the 1960/1970.  Its a friend of his Patrick Joseph Phillips that I am looking for though James stood as godfather at a baptism in July of 1970 for P J Phillips.  Do you think it might be anyone you found on your own search?
