Hi Debby,

Most records sites are on-going projects and don't have all records on-line

Many rely on volunteers to transcribe the millions of records, so it might take a while yet.

And there is always the very real possibility, that some of the people we are looking for,
were registered somewhere else, where we are not expecting them,
or they were so badly transcribed, that we haven't recognised the entry, although it is there   :(

What death are you looking for in Sunderland? Don't forget that a death is registered in the district it took place, and not necessarily where the person normally lived.

Hi Debby

There are not alot of counties that have records indexed through the 20th century. Your grandfather may well have lived post WWII. My thoughts would be to answer YES to your question

so where can i find these deaths? do i have to go thro all the deaths on ancestry for a relavent year and hope for the best

It doesn't take as long as you think  :)  By the time you have spent an hour or two searching other places on the net, you could have checked quite a few years on ancestry.  If you know the year - you can search same in under 5 minutes.

You could perhaps ask for a lookup on the NBI if it covers your area of interest. (Someone else will know much more about this than myself)

Do you have any family members who can give you an approx death date?

Trish

Stan's point is very important - I had a gg uncle lived his last 40 years in Hertfordshire & died in Cornwall (went to the sea to recuperate  :( )

I do know he died in one of those 2 places, but no one seems to know what year, his wife died in the early 70's in Houghton le spring, that was confirmed my mother. I was born in 67 and i believe he died before i was born!
thanks for your advice. I will have another chat with my mother anyway.  ;D

The Sunderland Registrars site only has deaths from 1990-2005 at the moment, although it is intended to cover from 1837 eventually.

It doesn't take long to search ancestry deaths quarter by quarter over a period of a few years.  Remember that it wasn't long ago that this involved travelling to London and manhandling the very heavy volumes containing these indexes.

Why not volunteer to transcribe some of these indexes?  It takes about two hours to do each 100 names when the originals are handwritten.
