Gordons of Bervie Completed
« on: Friday 23 February 07 05:19 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone assist with any information about John Gordon and Rebecca Webster. c1770-1790 and their marriage.

From the IGI  I found  the following children  : Thomas 1812, Jean 1814, Margaret 1816, Agnes 1816, John 1818, Alexander 1821.

The  marriages and deaths of Jean, John and Alexander are recorded in The Victorian Birth Deaths and marriages records in Australia.

Any help would be appreciated.

As I live in Bervie (Inverbervie) I think I can help with your query.
In addition to the six children you mention, there is one more - James Gordon b. 1823 Bervie.  I'm almost certain that a John Gordon born at Bervie on 7 Nov 1790 is the father of these children.  His parents are Thomas Gordon & Jean Longmuir.  Rebecca Webster was born at St Cyrus, Kincardineshire on 1 Dec 1788 her parents being John Webster and Catherine Allardice.  I'll contact you again when I have done further research on this family.

Thankyou for your offer.

I had gatherd the names you mention from the IGI but had no real documentation to support my inclusion of Thomas Gordon and Jean Longmuir and John Webster and Catherine Allardice in my tree, although I suspected they were the correct names.

I have been corresponding with an Allerdice researcher who is following another line but could not help me clarify anything re the Gordons.

Any inforamtion is helpful either supportive or eliminating my research.

regards

Robyn

Hi Robyn,
This is my "take" on your Gordon family; John Gordon was married to Christian Coutts at Bervie on 16 May 1755.  They had 4 children all born at Bervie:-

James 13 Feb 1756
Jean 27 Feb 1758
Thomas 28 Sep 1759
John 21 Feb 1762

Thomas married Jean Longmuir on 3 Jun 1790 at Bervie, and their family, all born at Bervie were:-

John 7 Nov 1790 - An Agricultural Labourer aged 50, living on his own at Fishergate, Bervie (1841 Census).
Ann 4 Apr 1793
Robert 27 Apr 1795
Rachel 4 Oct 1797
Hugh 28 Jan 1801
Jean 14 Jun 1803
Alexander 25 Aug 1808
James 25 Aug 1808,

As you know, John married Rebecca Webster and had 7 children born at Bervie.  John, junior,(3 Nov 1818) was an Agricultural Labourer, aged 20, living at Threewells Cottage, Bervie (1841 Census). His brother Alexander was a Ship Carpenter, aged 19,  living at Gourdon, a fishing village 1 mile south of Bervie.
In an extract from a notebook left by the late Hercules Linton (designer of the clipper ship "Cutty Sark") he mentions that "Previous to the building of the present bridge in 1799, there stood at its south end a large gravel bank which stood at least 10 feet above the level of the present roadway.  This mound had been used for a long period as a supply of gravel and sand to the inhabitants of the town.  So deep was it dug into about 50 years ago, that the founder of the Girls' School, Mr John Gordon lost his life in it from being smothered".
I seem to remember hearing that he left money to have the school built.
I hope that this will be of some help in your research.

Bervonian.

Thank you so much for this information.

It corresponds wiwth what I had uncovered on the IGI which which as we know is not the best way to research.

I had also searched the 1841 census and found those entires but again was not sure if they were the correct Gordons.

It nice to have it all confirmed.

My fellow researcher will also be very pleased as her husband, like myself is a direct descenant of these Gordons through John Gorodn b 1818.

We are most grateful.

Robyn in Wodonga and Margaret in Sydney.
