Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists 3 Newell properties in Craignageeragh. James Newell was farming plot 34 a 26 acre farm. Living on that farm in labourer’s cottages were John & David Newell.

Probate abstracts from the PRONI wills site:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of David Newell late of Craignageeragh County Antrim Farmer who died 6 July 1892 at same place were granted at Belfast to James Newell of Craignageeragh Farmer the Son. David was 74 when he died. His wife was still alive (according to the certificate). Informant was son John.

The above probate file will have been destroyed in the 1922 fire.

Probate of the Will (and three Codicils) of James Newell late of Craignageeragh County Antrim Retired Farmer who died 23 December 1903 granted at Belfast to Wilson M'Keown Solicitor and James Newell Van Driver

The above will is on-line on the PRONI wills site and names various nephews including James Newell son of his brother David, and James Newell son of his brother John.

Probate of the Will and three Codicils of John Newell late of Craignageeragh County Antrim Farmer (Retired) who died 2 May 1910 granted at Belfast to James Newell Carrier and Wilson McKeown Solicitor

The above probate file should be in PRONI, in paper format.

David’s wife is probably Elizabeth Newell who died at Craignageeragh on 6.4.1892, aged 81. She is named as wife of David Newell, farmer. So she pre-deceased him. I think the status on his death certificate as still married is probably an error.

Here are both death records. Their son, James (Craignageeragh) was the informant on both records.

There's a Robert James Mitchell, aged 10, a grandson staying with James and Mary on the night of the 1911 census.

This leads to a Mary Newell staying with her daughter and son-in-law in Glenhugh, Ballyconnelly in the 1901 census. Their 5-month old son Robert is also on the form.

Robert Mitchell is a retired Presbyterian minister.

Looks like young Robert was registered as Nelson.

His mother is Bessie Newall.
Their marriage in 1900.

Probate abstract:

The Will of Thomas Nicholl late of Craignageeragh County Antrim Farmer deceased who died 3 April 1872 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oaths of Robert Nicholl and Michael Walker both of Craignageeragh (Ahoghill) aforesaid Farmers the Executors.

The will itself is on-line on the PRONI wills site. It makes no mention of a wife so she probably pre-deceased him. It does mention daughters Peggy Ann & Mary plus his sister Mary Martin. It doesn’t appear he had any sons (or none available to take over the farm anyway) and so he directed it to be sold.

Further to Elwyn's find, there are two deaths for Thomas Newell in https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp, aged 84 and 60 respectively for 1872.

As yet, there are no death records on-line pre 1878 on IrishGenealogy.ie, but hopefully in the not-too-distant future. However, you can order photocopies of the records.

Hi Maggie,

I am looking for Stewart's from Ahoghill.

William Stewart who died 14 Oct 1949.
Isaac Stewart died 19 Sep 1907.
Margaret Stewart died 13 Jul 1911.
Grace Stewart & William Stewart both died 1920.

If you have photos of any of these graves it would be brilliant if you could email them to me.

Many Thanks
