Hi Stan and Valda,

Thank you for your replies,

  Valda,

From the Free BMD  transcribed information you have given me it looks like William Tattersall married Mary Ann Mc Connell and not Mary Dooley.

The entry on the Ancestry BMD for Mary Dooley looks like 752 until you magnify it and it then looks like a very faint 3.

I realize that mistakes are made in the transcribing, so I think the only way to find which Mary William Tattersall married is to send for his marriage in 1849 page 753 and see which Mary I get back.

Thank you for all your help.

Hi Hopton.  To answer your original question, you might want to know how the Lancashire BMD index differs from the GRO index.
Records of church marriages are written into the parish register at the time of the marriage.  When the register is full, it is sent to the local register office.  The Lancashire BMD index is taken from these registers, so that a couple shown as marrying each other probably did, because the names are seen together in the register.

Every three months the minister of a church has to copy out all the marriages for that quarter, and send that copy to the GRO.  Obviously there is room for error here.  The GRO index gives a volume and page number for each marriage entry, which is their own and has nothing to do with the reference system used at the local register office.

Ordering a certificate from a local register office requires you to know where the marriage took place, because they need to know which church register to look at.   However sites like Lancashire BMD make this easy for you by giving you a form with the details already on.

What I am trying to say is that the Lancashire BMD site is going to be a bit more reliable than the GRO index.

Hi Gallium,

Thank you for that, I will use the form on the Lancashire BMD site to send off for the certificate.

I've just had a look at Lancashire BMD and see that it was a register office marriage, but the same thing applies.

If you use Lancashie BMD to look up all the names which appear together on the GRO page, you will see that Mary Ann McConnell married Robert Rogers, Michael Kelly married Mary Finnaty, James Ginachio married Teresa Devoto.  These marriages, as well as William Tattersall and Mary Dooley's, all took place at Manchester Register Office

The marriages referenced page 752 took place at Prestwich St Mary.  William Barker married Mary Elizabeth Platt, Joseph Jagger married Esther Butterworth, Joseph Dronsfield married Mary Tasker.  There was no Mary Dooley marriage at Prestwich St Mary.

Thanks everyone for all your help sorting this out, I will still send for the certificate just to confirm it is Mary Dooley ::)

I have had her in my tree for some time now and didn't really want to loose her ;D

   Thanks again
