Longbenton - Missing Records?
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 10:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I've found a marriage for my ancestors John Sedgwick and Hannah Smith on 30 March 1760 in Longbenton, through Family History Online.  However, the Longbenton parish marriage records between 1755 and 1762 are missing on the films from the Latter Day Saints.  So, if Family History Online have the information, it must be somewhere, but can someone tell me where else I could get the information.  I'm over in Australia, so there's no chance of me going to Newcastle for it.

Looking further back in the Longbenton records I had, I couldn't find a baptism for John or Hannah, so want the marriage record to see which parish they came from.

Thanks for any ideas.

Sally.

The entry in familyhistoryonline.net is from the Northumberland and Durham Marriages supplied to the FFHS by Northumberland and Durham Family History Society.

Perhaps they can give you more information.

Hi There

Thank you both for your replies.  I'll get onto the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society first.  If no luck, then J.A., I'd really appreciate it if you could look it up, but in your own time.

I'll keep you posted with what goes on.

Many thanks.

Sally.

Hi Michael

Thanks for that.  Do you know why there are two dates (30 Mar & 14 Apr 1760) for their marriage?  I'm hoping to find out which parish they came from.

Sally.

Sally,

I was hoping you wouldn't ask that LOL.

I have seen these "duplications" a few times.

My hunch is that the transcribers have included a record of the publication of one of the three weekly Banns, prior to the marriage itself at the 4th week.

When I next have my nose in the Longbenton church records ( a few days time) I'll have a wee gleek.

But whatever, it seems clear that they were married in Longbenton parish church.

Hi Michael

Thanks for replying.  At least two marriages dates is better than none!  I look forward to see what you can tell me from the records, since the ones I had completely missed those dates.

Sally.

(ps.  I think I've had contact with you before about my other ancestors from Long Benton, the Duncan's).
