UK Non-parish, maritime and foreign BMD certs to go online
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 20:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi List

Some news from the National Archives: they have signed a license with Genealogy Supplies Limited to scan the existing microform records of various birth, marriage and death certificates and place them online later in the year. The release suggests the project will be in its final stages by December 2007. Until then, it will not be possible to order the microform copies at Kew at all.

The online records will be fully indexed and searchable - free to view at Kew - but, presumably, available for a download fee generally, although the release from Kew does not spell that out.

The certificates are non-parochial (including Baptist, Methodist and Quaker records), births, marriages and deaths at sea and foreign BMDs of British Nationals.

Best wishes
Kath

Hi,

As a new user of Rootschat I am delighted to read this E-mail.    I married overseas in 1975 (under British Law in Zambia) and have often wondered what would happen if we lost our marriage certificate.    I presume these are the sorts of Certificates that will be at the National Archives.

Sorry Sue, there is nothing as recent as that in the series that are being digitized.

The record of your marriage will be held in Zambia, and there may also be a copy in the General Register Office's High Commisssion Returns.

Genealogy Supplies Ltd have as yet no target date for the Miscellaneous Overseas Collection in RG32-36 at The National Archives. So far they have completed (more or less) the Nonparochial Registers in RG4 and RG5. The rest of the Nonparochial collection in RG6-RG8 will be next, but no actual target date - they've been 'coming soon...' for quite a while.

Meanwhile the records can still be consulted on film at Kew, it's only the remote ordering of copies that is unavailable while the digitization is going on.

Hi,   I should have known it was too good to be true - the children have never been quite convinced we actually got married!!!!!!!!!!    Sue
