Well done Gadget  :) That certainly looks like the family in the English Censuses. How the name Valentine crept in to the marriage registration goodness knows!

Choco, as Gadget suggests, it would be worthwhile looking at the 1891/1901 censuses to verify England as a birth place for 'Valentine' (not sure how his name will show, maybe search by wife or children).

Regards.

Hi

I've had a good look on the 1891 and 1901 censuses for Mary and Valentine/Albert/Alfred with a range of surnames but can't come up with anyone that looks like a positive. I haven't tried Glover yet  :-\

Choco - do you have a list of their children in rough birth order (and possibly years). We might be able to do a search on those  :-\

We'll crack it  :D

...and a little bit more:

There is a death registration for a John Haggarty, Stoke Damerel, Devon

June q, 1863, vol 5b, page 237.

Stoke Damerel is the part of Plymouth that includes Devonport, etc. I used to walk by the church there nearly every day. A lovely Churchyard.

So John Haggerty married Emma Jane Fisher, East Stonehouse, Devonport in the June quarter 1849

John was a seaman and on the 1851 census, Emma (seaman's wife)  is living with her sister Susannah, brother James and his wife and her 1 year old son John.

By 1861 John and Emma are living in Morice Town, Devonport. John is some kind of ?commercial traveller, born Cork Ireland.  They have three children living with them (?John jnr dies) - Charles, 8, Daniel, 5 and Elizabeth, 3.

John Haggarty dies June quarter 1863, Stoke Damerel

Alfred Valentine Huggerty is born  in the March quarter 1864 in East Stonehouse.

Emma marries George Glover in June quarter 1867 in East Stonehouse.

At some stage between then and 1871, they move to Glasgow and are living John Street, Barony in 1871. George is a foreman at Works(?). They have the following children living with them:
John Haggarty, 21 (so he didn't die)
Charles Haggarty, 18
David Haggarty, 15 (probably Daniel)
Mary Glover (is this Elizabeth haggarty?) , 13
Alfred Haggart (our Valentine), 7
George Glover, 8 months

By 1881 George is dead and Emma is living in  Main Street, Barony with the following children - all listed as Glover!
David, 23 (Daniel)
Albert, 17 (Alfred Valentine)
William, 9 (?George)
Charles, 4 - a grandson

Alfred Valentine marries in 1885 and Emma Jane Glover, formerly Haggarty nee Fisher dies the same year.

in the 1891 and 1901 Alfred Valentine is using the Glover surname. He and mary are living in Victoria Street, Govan. By 1901, they have the following children listed -

William, 15 (?John)
Alfre, 13
Emily, 11
Annie, 5
David, 3
Matthew, 7 mths.

Alfred is a Hammerman.

Alfred Valentine Haggerty died, aged 59 in 1923.
