a challenge ?
« on: Monday 26 February 07 07:23 GMT (UK) »
This is a challenge for me and im unsure as to how to go on with this line of family.

Family names in question are johnson and robson.  my g grandfather was james johnson born about 1900, his father was also called james johnson they were both miners.  on 6th june 1921 he married annie robson.  place of residence for james johnson on marrige cert was 47 east street, (presumably gateshead).
Annie robson was born around 1901, her father was john robson and was a plumber. annie died aged 19 or 20, around my nanas birth, in january 1922. her place of residence on marraige cert 45 east street. they were married in the parish of st james gateshead.

i know it seems like a lot of info but due to the names being common and im new to this im really unsure of which avenue to take.  id be really really grateful for any information on my g grandparents,   Thankyou

Hi
I would be tempted to write to the local register office and ask them to send Annie's death certificate and look for birth certificates where the father is called John.  All BMDs are free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk.  Make sure you choose the complete version.   You know an approximate date so that helps.   Where was she buried?   Church records might help.  Did James remarry?   That certificate might help too.
Finding both families in 1901 is the ideal next step but as you say they are common names.  Who were the witnesses at the marriage?  Often they are siblings so help to differentiate between familes.
It is always difficult to research in the 1900s.  Good luck!
Andrea

If I were a gambler, when it comes to Annie's birth, I'd head for a Gateshead one.

In 1901 I've found a John Robson in Gateshead, with a daughter Hannah - possible witness? I've also just noticed - he happens to live at 45 East Street. Next door at 47 is  Thomas Robson.

John             Robson Head 31 Plumber  Gateshead
Isabella            "      Wife 32                 Hebburn
Andrew             "      Son 5                   Gateshead
Elizabeth Jane "       Daur 9                      "
Ethel                "       Daur 7                      "
Hannah            "      Daur 3                       "
Mary Isabella   "      Daur 1                       "

You never know :)

There's also a possibility for James Senior at  6 Kents Terrace, Gateshead

James Johnson Head 23 Coal Hewer  Durham, Felling
Hannah  "         Wife  22                     Durham Chester Le St.
Jonathan "        Son    1                      Durham, Gateshead
