the Baptism of Robert JOHNSTON/E  b 1816 Girthon KIRKCUDBRIGHT.

Need to find his parents names, and any siblings of his.


Robert Johnston/e married Margaret Hogg 1oth March 1840 at Minnigaff.

Would like  to find witness names on marriage.

I think we've had a look for Robert before. Strangely we couldn't find his death either.

I've had a really good look and still can't find his death - though he could have possibly died England or been mistranscribed.

I've had a good look for possible baptisms 1814-1818. There are a few possibles in KKD parishes but none in Minnigaff and none very close to there. I've also tried neighbouring parishes in Wigtownshire.

Could you let me have the list of his and Margaret Hogg's children in date order and also Margaret's parents' names. It might help with the two or three that I've found.

Helen Johnston/e            b  1856 

Mary/Marion    Johnston/e   b   1859

I found this and wondered if this is a possibilty for Robert Johnston/e,s

parents.(Robert b 1816)

found a death also  of a Robert Johnstone 25th Dec 1841.


I have found name transcribed as Johnston  but the name is  actually JOHNSTONE.

Any help with this family greatly appreciated.

From the names of Robert and Margaret's children, I would say that  Robert's parents would be a William and Helen.
As I said before, i can find no Roberts born Girthon BUT I've found a strng candidate in the neighbouring parish of Borgue:

Robert Johnstone, born 13 April 1813. parents William Johnstone and Helen Lindsay

There are two other children listed for this couple in Borgue:

John Bland - 6 October 1811
Helen - 5 may 1821

There seems quite a gap between Robert and Helen.

I don't think your Moffat find would be him. Here is a map of the parishes of Kirkcudbrightshire.

it seems it could be a big possibilty as I found a Helen Johnston age 70
b Port Patrick Wigtown     widow

living next door to Robert b 1816 on the 1861 census at 37 College Street

Maxwelltown  Troqueer.

name transcribed as  Helen JOHNSTON. on 1861 census.
