Russell's & Rigg's - Cumbria
« on: Wednesday 28 February 07 10:29 GMT (UK) »
Hiya...

I have  Sarah Ellen Russell b1857 in Harrington, Cumbria, married to Isaac Rigg b1854 in Cleator, Cumbria.  I think Isaac's Father was Robert Rigg b1820 in Broughton, Lancashire.

They had at least 7 children -
Hannah Mary Rigg b1879 in Cleator
Alice Rigg b1881 in Lamplugh
Robert Henry Rigg b1884 in Cleator
Sarah Elizabeth Rigg b1887 in Cleator
Janet Russell Rigg b1887 in Cleator
Issac Rigg b1890 in Cleator
Margaret Jane? Rigg  b1892 in Cleator

Is anyone connected to this family?

Many thanks,

Elford/Padfield/Pointing/Selmes - Somerset
Grindell & Horstead - E & W Yks
Richardson/Pheasant/Lightowler/Broadhead - E & W Yks
Walker - Yks
McDermott - Lanarkshire

Hi
Your best bet is probably to try to trace the marriage as that certificate will give the father's name and occupation.   All BMDs are free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk.   Choose the complete version.

Hiya Mary,

I am still in the process of searching for my Rigg's...I have quite abit of info already though.   The top of the tree is Robert Rigg b1820 in Broughton in Furness, Lancs.  He married Hannah b1829 in Drigg, Cumbria & they had Henry b1846 in Ulpha, John b1848 in Ulpha, Wiiliam b1851 in Seathwaite, Lancs, Robert b1848 in Dalton in Furness, Isaac b1855 in Cleator, Edward b1857 in Cleator,  Hannah b1860 in Cleator.  In the 1871 census, Robert & his family are still living at Cleator, Cumbria.

I haven't yet found a Rigg family member who died in a mining accident, but as I said...I've only just started tracing the Rigg's.  I also have quite abit more information - too much to list, what would you like to know?

Regards

Hi

I have the following surnames in Ulpha and Seathwaite:

Stephenson
Tyson
Dawson
Casson
Hird
Jenkinson
Warrinder

I haven't come across a Rigg yet, but as they are only small hamlets it may not be long.

Regards

Have you been in touch with Amanda?  Perhaps you already know she is doing a book about the Wellington disaster where James RIGG perished.
