next of kin

Hi...I am wondering if anyone knows if "next of kin" has to be someone connected by a family line or can it be a friend etc.  Information from a cemetery in Canada  re burial of my Aunt states next of kin as a person I have never heard of ...I have had skeletons popping up all over the place so perhaps this is another?

I have always understood that next of kin is a blood relation or married partner .Usually servicemen and women have to nominate a blood relative or married partner as next of kin.

Present days this would apply to Civil Contracts, but not to a couple iving together.

Just seen that you are in OZ so perhaps the laws in OZ and Canada may be differant to UK. Might be worth mailing a site in Canada to find out what their regs. are there
