« on: Wednesday 24 November 04 21:21 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone help please?

I have 1851 as follows

John Emmings c 1811
Jane wife c1814
Maria Dau c1843
John  son c1847
William son  c1849

address 5 Caroline Place Cambridge

As far as I can find my John Emmings always lived in the same area of Cambridge around the East Road area, from 1881, can anyone tell me where he was in 1861 please ?

I also have a mystery as his wife my great grand mother Martha Emmings is on 1871 without him...shown as married and living at Occupation Road , Chesterton, Cambridge, she was an Unwin from Histon/ Impington.

Where was John in 1871???

What about this John HENNINGS:

1871 at 50 Broad Street, St Andrew the Less

John HENNINGS head married 59 lab
Mary J wife 57

with a couple of boarders ..............  John PRESS? unm 21 butcher

All b. Cambridge

It is disputable whether it says HENNINGS or HEMMINGS but is indexed as HENNINGS.

If I was talking about somebody called HEMMINGS, I would pronounce it EMMINGS so quite easy fo an enumerator to put an "H" in front (or remove it!).

Good thinking re Hennings! I'd tried all sorts of combinations for 1871 but not that one!

But where was John born c 1847 in 1871? It doesn't seem likely that John Press is him as he seems a bit young (Martha had a 7 year old son), unmarried and would have probably been described as son.

Martha in Chesterton is described as head so John may have been working away from home (Martha also had a 6 month old son as well) as opposed to just visiting someone.  A railway worker perhaps?  I had a couple of these where the husband was laying track away from home, living with the rest of the gang.

Wherever he was in 1871 he was back with Martha in 1881 also at Broad St, Cambridge, a few doors away from his parents.

I suspect he's probably mistranscribed somewhere on the index.

Thank you ALL, you really are 'gems'.

David.......  1861....Just the info I required.
This is John Emmings Snr my g g Grandfather also his son  John Jnr my Great Grandfather. Thank you VERY much  :) I will continue to search for John Jnr 1871. I had guessed that he was working away or visiting but the mystery is WHERE ??  Thank you again for all your help.

Caslaguidi..  1871.... again John Snr , the John Press will probably be related to John Snr's wife Mary nee Press. John and Mary lived at 13 Broad St in 1881 John Jnr and Martha nee Unwin lived at  23 Broad St in 1881. Thank you for your help, I hadn't thought of that spelling !!! Many thanks :)
