Giles\Shellam Lookup Cardiff Glamorgan
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 06:56 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please help with a lookup for Annie Giles b. abt 1856 Cardiff, Glamorgan d. abt 1896. Also George Shellam b. abt 1854 Ely, Glamorgan d. 3 Oct 1906 whom she married.

I have a certificate of marriage that they married 20 Apr 1878.  George was a Boilermaker living at 19 Alice Street Cardiff.  His Father was Alfred Shellam - Shoemaker Deceased.

Annie was a Spinster living at 113 Bedford Street Cardiff.  Her Father was Thomas Giles - Farm Bailiff.

I am trying to find enough information to go back another generation.  I have no idea what Annie's Mother's name was other than Margaret.  I know nothing about George's mother.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

these two seem to be very good at hiding, but I've found a couple of things.

George's birth registration
George Shellam march qtr 1855 Cardiff vol 11a pg 219

There is an Alfred Shellam in the area but too young to be George's father, but there is this one lodging in Chepstow in 1851 who looks a good bet
Back, Chepstow H0107/2443 folio 396 pg 58
Alfred Shellam unm 24 boot & shoemaker b. Woolaston, Glos

and his marriage registration
Alfred Shellam june qtr 1851 Chepstow vol 26 pg 53
There are 3 female names on the page - why couldn't they have married a few weeks earlier and been on the census together!

and possible death registration
Alfred Shellam june qtr 1862 Chepstow vol 11a pg 5
same quarter Bertha Shellam Chepstow vol 11a pg 6

no sign so far of Annie

Amanda's birth was registered Chepstow, so birth places for these 2 wrong way around possibly?
Amanda Mary Shellam sept qtr 1853 Chepstow vol 11a pg 9

The bad news is that Mary Ann's maiden name was Jones from marriage ref I gave you above. Also, I'm not finding the family in 1871. I thought I'd found a re-marriage for Mary Ann in Chepstow, and although she's in Cardiff for the 1871, she's younger and no sign of any Shellams in the house.

But I have found some more generations
1841 Brookend, Wollastone, Glos H0107/369/6 folio 14 pg 3
George Shillam 40 shoemaker
Jane 40
Alfred 14
George 5
Amanda 10
Jane 3
Martha 90
all except Martha born in county.
I was searching for anyone called Shellam anywhere in 1871 and spotted George in Woolaston - cordwainer and postmaster, and was pleased when this census makes it look like the right man.  :D

As for the Giles family, I'm beginning to think that Ann might have exaggerated her father's occupation. There is this family in 1861
Cardiff St Mary RG9/4034 folio 72 pg 14
Thomas Giles head mar 34 coal dealer b. Llantrisant
Margaret wife 33 b. Pendoylan
David son 6 b. Cardiff
Hannah dau 3 b. Cardiff
Margaret dau 2 b. Cardiff
Thomas son 1 b. Cardiff
Abbey Hanton servant 23
can't read the address possbily east something. The family don't seem ever so keen on registering the births of their children either. I did spot the marriage
Thomas Giles dec qtr 1852 Cardiff vol 11a pg 315 on same page Margaret Davies - oh no, double whammy  :(

I've found this family in 1871, but no Hannah/Annie with them - no death registered either so still possible. Thomas is now a labourer. RG10/5362 folio 114 pg 33 at 33 Frederick Street A*c*t*y has them as Gales, but it's Giles on the census itself. haven't spotted them in 1881 either. :-\

Amanda Mary Shellam baptised 25/9/1853 daughter of Alfred (publican) and Mary Ann of Bridge St, Chepstow.
Possible baptism for Mary Ann Jones 12/10/1828 daughter of William (shipwright) and Mary of Chapel Lane, Chepstow. She's the only Mary Ann I can see around that time, but there's at least one Maria and she might not have been baptised in the established church. Marriage cert would confirm father.

Thank you so much.  They never make it easy it seems.  This is definately worth chasing down.  I am not sure that the last Annie is mine as her father is Thomas Giles.  Alfred was George Shellam's father.  They seem to disappear and reappear.

sorry, don't follow you. The father in this Giles family is called Thomas. I haven't spotted an Annie with father Thomas other than this one on the census as Hannah. Can't see a Thomas Giles who is a farm bailiff either, with or without correct daughter. There's an Ann who is a few years older whose father is John and a farmer but she gives her pob as Llantrisant, not Cardiff.

Oh my Gosh.  Now that I have the cobwebs out of my head I just heard bells go off.  I have a marriage cert that was in a box of family papers for a Mary Ann Shellam.  I had no clue who she was until now.  The marriage cert is from 1864 Parish Church, in the Parish of Chepstow, county of Monmouth.  It states 29 Mar 1864 Joseph White age 24 - Bachelor, Boilermaker, residence Chepstow, father Henry White - Carpenter married Mary Ann Shellam age 30 Widow residence Chepstow father Seth Jones.   Mary Ann was a Jones at birth and her father was Seth.  This is also her second marriage.  I am forever indepted as you have helped connect some dots that I would never have been able to on my own.  Mary Ann remarried after Alfred died.  She was young enough to have had more children so there are possibly other siblings that I was not even aware of.  Unfortunately she had to pick a last name that is going to make this challenging.  But at least we know her father was Seth which is one step further.
