1891 census. Image not available
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Are there any sources that have the 1891 census images other than Scotland's People?
I have found the person that I want (Jane Edith Younger age 44 in Edinburgh) but it says the image is not available, but I can order it for £10.
I wanted the details of the birth locations of her children and I'm a bit stuck.

Hi Peter,

The children appear to be Amy and Charles, would this be correct? If so I can give you the details.

Thanks for looking.
I'm going nuts!
I've got Ancestry as well and never thought of looking on there.
Both born London! Now to find them on BMD.
But why isn't the image available? Is it because it's too poor a copy?
It's that b****y cricket thread! It keeps throwing my concentration!

Hi Peter,

I imagine it is due to a poor quality image that it is not available. If you still wish to get a copy of the original or might like to in the future I would recommend asking a researcher to get a photocopy. As Libraries have a copy of the microfilms researchers will usually get a photocopy for about £4, which is a lot cheaper than the GRO's prices!

Also just to mention Ancestry is not a full transcription so although it might not matter in this case it is always good to remember.

I wish Scotland’s people would get the imaging problems sorted though!

Emma

Mmm. That's what I suspected!
If it's worse than one that I have just had cause to refer back to them, then it must have been really bad.
As you say, this time it didn't matter, but I would have liked to see the image in case there was more information available.

Hi Peter,

Ancestry does not transcribe the marital status or the number of rooms, which I always think is a bit of a shame.

I like to check their transcription too. As it has not been transcribed by local people in the manner that other transcriptions have been produced I would just rather check it for myself. Another thing I do is crosscheck it with Freecen where possible because it is unlikely two people make the same mistake. But I don't think this is possible in this case.

Just as a follow-up:
I contacted SP on Sunday about the poor quality image and got a reply yesterday crediting me with the five units and promising to try and obtain a better image for me.
I can't ask for more than that, can I? :) :)
