Broady family brick wall
« on: Sunday 04 March 07 04:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am hoping SKS can help me break down my brick wall.  My great x 2 grandfather was one Joseph Broady born in Northwich in 1836.  He later married Jane Bentley.  I have managed to trace him forwards but have got stuck going back.  I found him in the 1841 census living on Penny(s) lane, Davenham with his parents Joseph born 1803 and Elizabeth 1794.  There was also a little girl named Jane Forster in the house that day.  I have found him in subsequent census but have not been able to find any siblings or who his mother, Elizabeth, might have been.  If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.  Thanks

Dianne (nee Broady)

Hi

There is a marriage in the IGI dated 1/June/1834 in Warrington for a Joseph Broady and Betty Forster.

It looks very likely going by her age 47 in 1841 that Betty may have been married previously.

hope this helps

Thats a great help Peter - thank you.  it might explain why Jane is in the home with them - it is possibly her daugher by a previous marriage.  Wouldn't it be nice if there were earlier census records!

Thanks again

Dianne

Hi,

Can't help with the marriage but I believe I can help with the Broady line. I have a Joseph Broady down as an non-direct ancestor b~1836 from the census and living with his parents Joseph & Elizabeth in 1841, and in London Road, Leftwich in 1851. I  have the following from visits to the record office in Chester (some also appear on IGI); some of the baptism records give the name of the parents parents.

Thomas Broady m Elizabeth Bradburn  13th Nov 1769 at St. Wilfreds Davenham (her parents Isaac b 27th Feb 1709 Shurlach bt 3 April 1709 Davenham m. Elizabeth Burges 29th Sep 1736 at St. Wilfreds; Isaac's parents Peter and Elizabeth)

children:
John b.19 Nov 1770 Shurlach, bt. 9 Dec Davenham
William b. 16 Aug 1777 Shurlach, bt 14 Sep 1777 Davenham
Thomas b. 29 July 1780 Shurlach, bt 13 Aug, 1789 Davenham
Sarah b. 25 Jul 1783 Shurlach, bt 17 Aug 1783 Davenham
Joseph b. 18th July, 1786 Shurlach, bt. 6 Aug 1886 Davenham
Ellen b. 9 Jan 1790 Shurlach, bt. 31 Jan 1790 Davenham
also ref. to a Charles.

John Broady m Elizabeth Tasker (her parents Robert and Elizabeth) did not check on either marriage.
children:
Joseph b. 15 Sep 1803 Lordship, bt 2 Oct 1803 Witton
Mary b. 16 April 1806 Lordship, bt 4 May 1806 Witton note: her father John was described as a Rockgetter in the baptismal record.
Two other children John and Betty but I have not got the year

Hope this helps,

Junev

Hi June and Peter - Thanks for all the information and assistance.  How exciting I have finally found a distant relative on my Broady line.  Do you mind sharing with me June, some of your line so that I can figure out wehere we both fit in.  I don't remember my grandfather Joe Broady and my father passed away quite young before I became interested in family history and so I have very limited klnowledge of the Broady and no real memories of them.  Thanks again for your help

Hi Dianne,

I do have some info on Broadys but it is not recent!

Thomas Broady (various spellings by the way) & Elizabeth Bradburn are my 5x's gr grandparents. I believe their son John is your direct line (which is the info already posted) mine is their son Thomas.

My Thomas m Martha Hassall 24 Dec 1804 at St. Wilfred Davenham, he died 21 Jan 1853; he was a rockgetter all his working life. Children: Marianne born 20 Aug 1805, Sarah b 1 Jan 1808, Ellen b. 23 Oct 1810 & Thomas bat. Dec 1813.

Their brother William m Nancy Jones (no marriage again as this info is from the baptism records but her parents given as John and Mary); They had at least 2 children William b 24 May 1803 and Mary Ann b. 12 Jul 1814. He was a shoemaker on the baptism records. Children born Lostock

Other brother Charles m a Martha ?; they had a son Robert born 17 Dec 1811 in Witton; Charles was recorded as a merchants clerk. I found a reference to a John but cannot be certain.

My direct line is Sarah (d 1867 Union Workhouse Salford); she married a William Hill 26 May 1828 at St Wilfreds, so the Broady name went! Her sister married a John Hill but I don't know if they are related! Thomas married Ellen Vernon (b~1814 Witton). Marianne I can't trace.

As I said it's not recent!! Feel free to come back about anything.

June
