Hi Anne-Marie,
My daughter did some work on mental health for her history thesis. She considered doing some research on the Nottingham Lunatic Asylum, but opted for another choice.
However, we came across a gentleman who wrote a dissertation on the asylum, and he has done lots of research - at Nottingham Archives.

I'm glad you found some information, but this may help someone else and provide useful source material.
There's also some information on this earlier asylum in The Nottingham Date Book.

Thanks for the info - this looks like a very interesting resource.  I have currently 'side lined' this part of the tree as I'm not getting too far.  I'm hoping to have a look at them again later this year so may well make use of it myself.

Although I never received formal permission, I did send my form off and I did receive some info about my relative - although sadly not much - so I assume the Health authority agreed to this.

Can anyone help me?  An ancestor died in Newark, Nottingham in June 1870.  I thought this was strange as the family lived in Bradford...I googled Hospitals in Nottingham and came up with General Lunatic Asylum in Newark.  Anybody got any ideas where I go from here to find out if Isabella did die here?  Many thanks in advance.

Have you got the death certificate?
If so does that say exactly where she died?

no, I haven't applied yet for a death certificate - it's just an assumption.

I think you ought to get the death certificate and see what it says.
If you have found the death registered in Newark district then that covers a wide area of Nottinghamshire and some Lincolnshire villages so it's possible she didn't die in Newark itself.

Hi there,
I was searching for information on Mapperley Asylum in Nottingham & came across this conversation.   Have you found out whether or not it is possible to get information on individual patients.    I'm looking for information on an ancestor who died there in 1894.  The Registration of Death does not give any clue as to why he was there.
