« on: Wednesday 03 March 04 11:58 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful if somebody could look up Annie McDonald in the 1891 Census in Chatham, Medway, Kent. She was born c.1869 and her husband was John Christopher McDonald born c.1853-6. There may be children Frances & Christopher. Thanks, Stiofan

It only came up with 1 Annie McDonald in Kent, but she is married to a David G McDonald in Gillingham, Kent - RG12/ 660/ Folio 65/ Page 43.
Only 1 Annie Macdonald in Kent, but she is single and a boarder.

113 Annie McDonalds in rest of country
John McDonald came back with 447 people of that name
John Christopher came back with zilch
Christopher came back with 5 – only 1 child with parents who were Alexander & Sarah
Christopher Macdonald came back with 1 – but parents were Roderick & Annie
Florence came back with 29 – 2 of which were in Kent, but neither with John & Annie as parents.
Florence MacDonald came back with 29 – but as far as I could see, non met your criteria.

So, where do we go from here - any other info to narrow the field down a bit

Thanks for looking there. Annie was actually born in Chatham if that helps (and they were married there and were there in 1901) and John is listed on 1901 Census as being born in Liverpool (although previously believed him to be Irish). Frances was born 1886/7 I think and Christopher c1888 but may have died of course. There also may have been other children, Ernest and Hewitt.

I do have one other query if you don't mind. I'm trying to trace Thomas McAuliffe. He was born in Marylebone in 1875 and is listed as 6 on the 1881 census and a scholar. He does not appear with the family on the 1891 census and I can trace one Thomas McAuliffe aged 26 on the 1901 census, who is an imbecile in an Essex asylum. I would like to trace him on the 1891 census when he was 16 to see if he really went from scholar to imbecile! It is not a common name so I am looking for Thomas McAuliffe aged 16 born in Marylebone if that is possible. Thank you so much, Stiofan

There is 1 Thomas McAuliffe, aged 16, Boarder, born in London on RG12/ 1338/ Folio 106/ Page 3 – at Cottage, New Hall Road, Boreham, Essex living with George & Elizabeth Digby and Family – and he is clearly shown as ‘Imbecile’

Hi again Stiofan

Thanks for looking there. Annie McDonald was actually born in Chatham if that helps (and they were married there and were there in 1901) and John is listed on 1901 Census as being born in Liverpool (although previously believed him to be Irish). Frances was born 1886/7 I think and Christopher c1888 but may have died of course. There also may have been other children, Ernest and Hewitt.

I cant explain why – but this time when I put Annie McDonald, Chatham, Kent into the 1891 census on line – it came back with the following:

RG12/ 2946/ Folio 34/ Page 61 – Number 52, Copeland Street, Everton, Lancashire[/b]

McDONALD John, Head, Marr, 40, Commissionaire, Liverpool, Lancs
Annie, Wife, Marr, 24, born Chatham, Kent
Frances, Dau, Unm, 4, Chatham, Kent
Ewart, Son, Unm, 2, Longford, Ireland
Ernest, Son, Unm, 6months, Dublin, Ireland

Hope that is what you were looking for

Thank you so much! That explains why I could not trace Ewart (Hewitt) & Ernest's birth if they were born in Ireland. That is all incredibly interesting. Also Thomas McAuliffe, although there is no guarantee that it is the same I have not been able to trace his death between 1881-1891 so I think it must be. Wonder what happened to him after the asylum in 1901. You've given me a lot to think about! All the best, Stiofan
