Springfield House, Edgeley, Stockport c 1887
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 19:28 GMT (UK) »
On her marriage cert in 1887 my g.grandmother gave her address as Springfield House, Edgeley. I have found it on Old -maps and it seems quite a substantial place. Does anyone with local knowledge know anything about this house - was it a private house or as we would say these days "a house of multiple occupation"? I have no doubt that Louisa was employed in some capacity.

Hi Celia

Thanks for your reply. My g.grandmother was Louisa Humpherson (from Shropshire) - I know she would have been employed in some capacity at Springfield House rather than a houseowner. I have been trawling through the 1881 census enumeration districts to try and find the occupants but it's never ending! I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.

Best wishes, Fairlane

Hi Fairlane
I cant get to the library till tomorrow Saturday, and Cheshire isn't very well covered on the historical directories. I did however find a snippit of info in the 1874 one.I, like you had thought it was probably the house of a landowner.Where the Esq's lived. ;D

1874. Alsager.

Joseph Yeardley, ESQ Springfield House

Mr George Heamersley Springfield House
I did a search using springfield but it is also a place name & surename. At least we now know what we are looking for ;D

Hi Fairlane  :)

Think I may have found your house, it was in the 1891 and 1901 owned and occupied by a family named Colles.
Mr Percy Collis was a manufacturer of billiard tables and must have been quite successful.
His wife Mary was a school teacher and once their family had grown up they moved from Cheadle to the larger Springfield House  in Edgley and opened a it as a private girls school with in 1891 18 teenage girls and 7 teachers plus several servants and governesses.
One of servants (domestic cook) in 1891 was a Julia Humperson aged 29 single and from Rockwardine in Shropshire, so maybe a relation to your Louisa.

The 1891 census ref. is RG12-2801-Folio25 - Page43
It is indexed in the Ancestry index  1881 and 1901 as Percy Colles, and in 1891 as Percy Collies.

Hope this is what your looking for

Peter and Celia,

What can I say? A brilliant result - I don't know how you do it. Julia was Louisa's older sister. My searching obviously needs a lot of refining. Thanks to you both.
