Carsons of Earsdon
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 20:57 GMT (UK) »
Searching for any family connections with the Carson Family of Earsdon in Northumberland later Heworth. William John Carson was born in County Derry in 1841, married Mary Moore in Scotland in 1865. Children were Isabella, Joseph, John William, Alexander, Margaret James George and Josiah. The family were shown on the 1881 census as living at 51 Railway Terrace Heworth. All the children were born in Earsdon except James, George and Josiah. In 1901 William was still living in the same area but with additional children of Andrew and David, living with his daughter Isabella.
Would love to hear from any Carson connections.

Mercel,

Sorry no family connections... just a couple of snippets for you....

There are indications that the family lived in, and the children were born in, Backworth, a colliery village.

The census officials of the day had a tendency to record "parish of birth", rather than the actual "place of birth"

Backworth was one of eight sub-divisions ( called "townships", Irish equivalent = "townlands" ) of the "ancient" parish of Earsdon.

If your Carsons were RC, their nearest RC church was St Wilfred's, in nearby Blyth.

On a similar hierarchical angle, they moved to Felling, which was a "township" within the "ancient" parish of Heworth.

The nearest RC church was St Patrick's at Felling. Nice feature with St Patrick's church records was that the priest  recorded Irish-root parishes of Felling/Heworth marriages ( in some early cases, he even recorded on  marriages, the maiden names of the mothers of the marrying couple).
